Ten years later, the show “My Babysitters a Vampire "still sinks its teeth into the funny bone while simultaneously pulling on the heart strings. First airing on Disney Channel in 2011 this action comedy remains fun to watch.
The show followed Ethan Morgan (Matthew Knight) and Benny Weir (Atticus Mitchell) on their bloodthirsty adventures with Ethan’s little sister Jane’s (Ella Jonas Farlinger) half-vampire babysitter Sarah Fox (Vanessa Morgan).
Most notable vampire media involves the same key plot points but with this Canadian produced comedy fantasy twists the concept. Sarah struggles with her new undead lifestyle as fledgling. Since she refuses to drink human blood, she is only a half-vampire.
The town of Whitechapel has a blood stained past that is catching up to the people of the town and Ethan, Benny and Sarah are there to clean it up. Benny, the comic relief best friend to Ethan also holds value to the team with his newfound spell casting powers from his grandma.
Ethan, also gifted, with the ability to see people's true intentions and futures with the touch of a hand. The gang of freshmen struggle with their newfound power and together fight off monsters that can usually only be seen in nightmares.
This television show comes after the 2010 movie of the same name, “My Babysitter’s a Vampire” where the origin stories of the main characters and their powers are unveiled. Along with that the lingering plot of Jesse (Joe Dinicol) the bloodsucker who turned Sarah is planted.
Each episode starts with one of the best 2000’s theme songs sung by Copperpot “Girl Next Door” is catchy electro-pop gold.
The dynamics and over plot of this show are interesting and keeps the audience excited to see what comes next which is rare when watching a show for tweens. The underlying romance between Ethan and Sarah that does not play through until season two is encapsulating.
Even Benny's weird obsession with every blonde girl he meets comes off more charming than alarming. As the episodes and characters progress it’s hard not to laugh or cry with the endearing cast.
While the show only got two seasons and ended on a cliff hanger the story was strong there has not been another tween comedy like it since. “My Babysitter's a Vampire” truly took a bite of the popular culture of vampire media and that chunk has yet to be replaced.
